Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has thrown his support behind Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou as a potential candidate to take charge at Tottenham Hotspur.
Following the dismissal of Antonio Conte in March, Spurs have been on the lookout for a new manager, but have struggled to find a suitable replacement.
Despite holding multiple meetings with former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann who was said to be front-runner for the job, they failed to secure his services as talks broke down.
After the Nagelsmann setback, Feyenoord manager Arne Slot emerged as the next big favourite, but despite having a successful first meeting with the club officials, talks abruptly broke down, leaving Tottenham in a state of uncertainty.
The setback in their managerial pursuit has raised concerns about the club’s ability to attract top-tier candidates, with Dean Jones expressing his worry over the club situation.
Following the latest setback, reports have resurfaced linking Postecoglou to Spurs, reigniting speculation about his potential appointment.
Postecoglou has enjoyed a successful tenure at Celtic, securing four trophies in two seasons, including two league titles.
He has the opportunity to complete a treble this season if his team triumphs over Inverness in the Scottish Cup final on June 3rd.
Mark Schwarzer, an Australian compatriot of Postecoglou, has lent his support to the idea of him taking over at Tottenham.
Schwarzer believes that with the right time and framework, Postecoglou could transform Spurs into genuine contenders for trophies and elevate them to the upper echelons of the league.
Speaking on the Gegenpod, Schwarzer said:
“Someone like Ange Postecoglou going into the club, I actually think they’d be genuine contenders for trophies.
“At what level, straight away? Maybe not, but certainly giving him the right time, and the right framework, I think he could make Tottenham very competitive at the top end of the table.”
While Postecoglou may not possess the high-profile reputation that some Spurs fans may desire, the club finds itself in a state of disarray.
Attracting a top manager at this juncture seems increasingly unlikely.
Furthermore, Tottenham are yet to appoint a new sporting director following Fabio Paratici’s resignation, further highlighting the need for stability and a clear direction.
