Caughtoffside‘s weekly interview with Stan Collymore always produces some interesting results, and that’s certainly the case here.
Today he’s run the rule over Mason Mount’s move to Manchester United, and predictably the midfielder’s transfer is causing the ever controversial Collymore some consternation.
We all know Mount’s quality, but former Liverpool man Collymore has some doubts about how he will fit in at Manchester United, who are looking to build on a season which had some big promise but also some big disappointment last time out.
“The thing with Mount is, no one seems to be quite sure exactly where his best position is,” Collymore said in an exclusive interview.
“Hopefully Ten Hag has it worked out – you’d certainly like to think he has. But I worry slightly because I just can’t see where he’d play.
“Would he play centrally? – You’d assume not because of Fernandes. So it’s likely he’ll play on the left of a midfield three and possibly drift in and out of the flank but that would require a good understanding with Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw, and again, that isn’t something fans have often seen when the trio have played together for England, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Ten Hag manages the situation next season.”
Well, for all his doubts, it’s too late now. Most reports claim that Mount is doing his medical as we speak, and will be announced as a Red Devil within the next few days. Collymore may not know where his best position is, but we’re sure Erik Ten Hag has a plan in mind.
Mount’s versatility probably hurt him at Chelsea at times, where he was used on the wing as a sort of inside forward under Thomas Tuchel when he would rather have been in the middle as more of a number 10.
