Former Celtic star Kieran Tierney has said that Callum McGregor’s availability for the club on Sunday will be massive for the team.
Brendan Rodgers’ side will travel to face Rangers at Ibrox with the Scottish Premiership finely poised with Celtic one point clear, albeit Philippe Clement’s side have a game in hand. Celtic have been without McGregor since the end of February after he was substituted in the 7-0 win over Dundee. However, he has resumed training this week and the Scotland Internationalist is expected to be involved.
Speaking to Sun Sport, Tierney reckons that the return of the Celtic skipper could have a massive impact on proceedings.
“If Callum’s available for Sunday then it will be massive for Celtic. He’s done it so many times in derby games. He’s a leader. He brings the team with him.
“There was a game at Ibrox two years ago when Cal just went on a run — the team was losing 1-0 — and from his determination Tom Rogic got the equaliser. It inspired everyone on the pitch and Celtic eventually won 2-1.
“In a moment, Cal decided to take things into his own hands and make a difference. He’s just a brilliant captain.”
McGregor suffered a calf strain which could have potentially ruled him out for the rest of the season. However, Rodgers has confirmed that he is available for selection and the Irishman will decide on what role to give his captain in the Glasgow Derby.
Rodgers will likely be weighing up whether to continue with Tomoki Iwata at the base of the midfield alongside Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley or to bring McGregor back in.
