Matias Vecino has been omitted from the Lazio squad list for Tuesday’s Coppa Italia clash against Genoa, even though he would have probably started since Lazio are set to rotate heavily and rest a few starters. The club let it known it happened due to disciplinary reasons, Il Messaggero informed.

The Uruguayan international reportedly had an argument with the staff following his exclusion from the XI versus Cagliari. The player eventually accepted the decision, as he stated on his social media platforms, where he claimed he wasn’t disrespectful toward anybody.

Vecino was held out of practice on the eve of the game, but there’s hope for a quick reconciliation with Lazio gaffer Maurizio Sarri. He has appeared in 15 matches so far. While he has started just once in Serie A, he has done so in every Champions League fixture.

According to Nicolò Schira, his lack of minutes is the root of the problem. The veteran expected to feature more, and a January exit can’t be ruled out. Galatasaray made a strong attempt to sign him last summer. They could try again during the winter.

Our Take on Lazio and Vecino

It’s an odd incident, and the decision probably came from above in trying times for the club. Things will probably get sorted soon enough, making it a non-problem. Even though he’s not a regular, he’s still a useful cog in their midfield. They’d have the opportunity to go younger, but they’d have to replace him properly if he left.
