Leeds United dodges relegation with win against Brentford

Leeds United will stay in the Premier League after climbing from 18th place to 17th on the last day of the 2021-22 season to avoid relegation. Instead, it's Burnley that will get sent down to the EFL Championship next season.

Burnley and Leeds both entered Sunday with 35 points, but Burnley held a significant lead in the goal-differential tiebreaker. That didn't matter, though, as Leeds got three points with a 2-1 win against Brentford, while Burnley lost 2-1 to Newcastle United.

The winning goal for Leeds came in stoppage time when Jack Harrison lasered a shot through traffic from just outside the penalty box.

Leeds was promoted to the Premier League two years ago when it won the EFL Championship title in 2020. Burnley had a six-season run in the Premier League after getting promoted in 2016.

Watford and Norwich City will join Burnley in the relegation, while Fulham and Bournemouth earned promotion to take their place. The final spot will go the winner of a promotion play-off between Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest next weekend.
