Lisandro Martinez has immediately become one of Old Trafford’s favourite players this summer since he joined from Ajax in a big-money deal.

Martinez was signed by Erik ten Hag at Ajax and since then, he has always been one of the first names on the Dutchman’s teamsheet and that has not changed at Manchester United.

Martinez has started all ten Premier League games so far and if he keeps this form up, he is likely to be in with a shout for player of the season in May.

The 24-year-old’s rugged Argentinian style has instantly impressed United fans and now, he has revealed that another former Red from Argentina is his idol.

Martinez has admitted that disgraced Gabriel Heinze, who tried to engineer a move to Liverpool in 2007, is one of his heroes.

“Gabriel Heinze is my idol. I love him,” Martinez told Sky Sports.

“I love the way he played, very aggressive, good mentality, good mentality in the duels. Every game as a final. He was a top player.

“I try to play like him. We are a bit different as well, but I like his mentality.”

Heinze was famously made captain by Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of the 2006/07 season but after a disagreement with the legendary manager, Heinze demanded United accept a bid from Liverpool.

Understandably, the Old Trafford club refused to entertain anything of the sort and Heinze was eventually sent to Real Madrid, where he made just 44 league appearances.

SN’s verdict…
Martinez’s arrival at United has been like a breath of fresh air. He has already dispelled any myths about his height and position to become one of the most reliable players in the division.

On the ball, he’s up there with some of the best and the balance he has added to Ten Hag’s side is invaluable – especially at this point of the rebuilding.

He will, of course, stay loyal to his countrymen even if United supporters will find it hard to accept that Heinze is idolised by one of their players.
