With their 1-0 victory over Las Palmas on Saturday, Mallorca have all-but ensured that they will be staying in La Liga for next season. Should Cadiz lose at home to Getafe on Sunday, their safety will be official.

Once Mallorca are mathematically safe, there should be more clarify on the future of their manager, Javier Aguirre. The Mexican coach is out of contract at the end of the season, and when quizzed on his future after the Las Palmas fixture (via Marca), he confirmed that negotiations will get underway soon.

“When we are mathematically safe, we’ll have to get together. I understand it to be like that. We’re worried about saving the team. The contract stuff doesn’t keep me up at night.”

Mallorca came into the weekend in 17th place, and although they are now 15th (with Celta Vigo and Rayo Vallecano still to play), it’s not a position that they would have wanted to be in. Still, Aguirre looks to be the man to take them forward, provided that the upcoming contract talks are fruitful.
