Leicester City coach Enzo Maresca admitted his appreciation of Stefano Sensi but noted that the club ‘aren’t allowed to do something’ for the Inter midfielder yet.

The Foxes suffered relegation from the Premier League last season but look set to quickly bounce back, dominating in the Championship this term. Maresca’s side currently sit top of the table, holding a 10-point lead over second place Ipswich Town.

Inter are looking to offload unneeded midfielder Sensi in the coming weeks, with his contract up in the summer, and Leicester were recently linked with the 28-year-old, who has seen just 65 minutes of action across four games this season.

Speaking in a press conference via Di Marzio, Maresca was asked about Leicester’s interest in Sensi.

“When you are strong and you can get stronger, it’s better. The only thing I can say about Sensi is that he’s a player I know very well and he’s the kind of player we really like.

“But as I said already, unfortunately in this moment we aren’t allowed to do something. We need to sell in case we want to do something. Because the transfer window is open, we’re going to see. It can happen that we aren’t going to have any players out or in.”

He touched on the cash-strapped nature at the club currently.

“The only thing I know is that we can’t spend money. We aren’t allowed. Probably the reason why is because of relegation and in the last two or three years the club has had some bad losses.

“When you get relegated, it’s always difficult. It’s not only because you need to rebuild and because the economic situation is not easy, even if we gave away 10 or 15 players last summer.”

Sensi is close to ending a four-year spell attached to Inter, a period that ultimately proved disappointing following an extremely bright start, with injuries blighting his time in the Lombardy capital.
