Mateo Kovacic is facing a spell on the sidelines with a thigh injury it has been revealed. The Manchester City midfielder withdrew from the Croatian squad for their matches against Latvia and Armenia and now it has emerged the type of injury setback suffered by Kovacic.

Sam Lee of the Athletic has reported that the Croatian international has suffered a recurrence of a quad injury. Kovacic missed three matches in September with the same injury. Croatia announced the withdrawal of Kovacic from their squad earlier this week via their official Twitter (X) account. Furthermore, Sam Lee adds that Kovacic stayed in Manchester for further assessment of the injury.

The news of Mateo Kovacic facing a spell on the sidelines is a blow for Pep Guardiola’s side. They face Liverpool after the international break then a gruelling run of fixtures follows that. City will face RB Leipzig, Tottenham and Aston Villa following the clash with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

It is a busy treatment room currently for the European champions. Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones and Sergio Gomez are currently sidelined with injury. Nathan Ake, Ederson and Matheus Nunes all withdrew from international duty due to injury concerns. Rodri was rested by Spain for their win over Cyprus due to feeling some discomfort. Erling Haaland also suffered an injury scare in Norway’s 2-nil friendly win over the Faroe Islands.

Pep Guardiola will speak to the media on Friday before City’s clash with Liverpool where an update on the City squad will be expected.
