Weston McKennie was tipped to depart again last summer following a loan spell at Leeds United, which didn’t buy him out because of their relegation. However, the offers were sufficient, and he earned a considerable role afterward. He spoke about it to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I see myself as a box-to-box midfielder. I like to be in the middle of the action in both phases. Honesty, the best thing for me is to be free tactically. I believe to have good instincts about my position. The United States have a nice midfield with a few versatile players.”

McKennie revisited his odd summer.

“Football is weird sometimes. I strongly wanted to stay in Turin to prove to be able to make a difference at this level and worked very hard during the pre-season preparation. I don’t hide from the doubts or criticism. They motivate me even more. I’m happy to have responded.”

McKennie is splitting time with Timothy Weah on the flank.

“We’re great friends on and off the pitch. We’re happy for each other’s success. There’s no jealousy between us. We have a special connection, and we were glad to start together in the Derby. We hope it happens again. It’s a nice moment for American football.”

The 25-year-old has played in every match and started the last six in a row. He has provided an assist so far this season.
