Megan Rapinoe opts-out of NWSL 'Challenge Cup'

When the National Women's Soccer League kicks off later this month amid the coronavirus pandemic with its "Challenge Cup" tournament, the league will be without one of its biggest stars and most recognizable names.

As The Telegraph's Molly McElwee reported, OL Reign coach Farid Benstiti told French outlet Le Progrès that Megan Rapinoe has elected not to rejoin the club for the competition:

"Megan is an important member of the squad and if she was with the rest of the team, [I feel] we would be able to accomplish something big as a club. She will be greatly missed by the team and also women’s football."

The winner of the 2019 Ballon d'Or Féminin and Best FIFA Women's Player hasn't yet given a reason for why she's not playing in the 25-game tournament.

As ESPN's Graham Hays wrote, participation in the tournament is voluntary, and footballers will still be paid their full salaries even if they don't play.

Last week, Reign CEO Bill Predmore offered public support for players not willing to return during the uncontrolled virus outbreak:

"Every player has a choice to make for herself; we're not forcing a timeline on that. If for whatever reason they're not comfortable, we'll be supportive of their decision."

Rapinoe made headlines earlier this spring when she suggested the 2020 Summer Olympics that have been postponed until next summer are "in doubt" because of the pandemic, and when she refused to rule out running for office once she calls time on her playing days.
