Milan look abroad for the coach to replace Stefano Pioli, with names including Mark van Bommel, Christophe Galtier, Paulo Fonseca, Julen Lopetegui and Marcelo Gallardo.

According to today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, club owner Gerry Cardinale has already decided to sack Pioli at the end of this season, even if he wins the Derby della Madonnina to stall Inter’s Scudetto celebrations on Monday.

Never really being in the Scudetto race and going out of the Champions League, Coppa Italia and now Europa League proved the final straw.

Cardinale is reported to be looking abroad for the next coach, with several different names mentioned in the media.

Fonseca and Lopetegui favourites

Gazzetta dello Sport outline profiles of their main candidates, with current LOSC boss Fonseca and ex-Spain, Real Madrid and Wolves coach Lopetegui as favourites.

Other options include Al Ittihad coach Gallardo, who is most known for his work at River Plate and Nacional de Montevideo, and Al-Duhail boss Galtier.

Last year, Galtier was famously close to the Napoli job before the swerve towards Rudi Garcia.

Van Bommel for Ibrahimovic

Tuttosport have another foreign name, suggesting advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic has set his sights on van Bommel.

This would be a return to San Siro for the Dutchman, who played for Milan from January 2011 to the summer of 2012.

His coaching jobs have been at PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg and since 2002 at Belgian club Royal Antwerp, where he won the Jupiler Pro League title.

A cheaper alternative would be to promote Ignazio Abate from the Primavera youth team to the main job, especially after he took Milan to their first ever UEFA Youth League Final.
