Pep Guardiola won't 'betray' Manchester City with decision on future

Pep Guardiola took over at Premier League club Manchester City ahead of the 2016-17 season and established himself as unquestionably one of the greatest managers of the modern era. Guardiola guided City to a third league title under his watch last spring, and his sides have won eight major trophies leading up to what is set to be yet another successful campaign considering City are viewed by many as the uncrowned Premier League champions for 2021-22 even before February.

The 51-year-old is out of contract in 2023 and hasn't yet re-upped with City amid rumors he could soon look for a different challenge. Ahead of Saturday's match versus Southampton, he spoke with reporters Friday about what may or may not come next.

"I won't think about the future when I still have the contract I have," Guardiola explained, according to Rob Dawson of ESPN. "I'm not good enough to think far, far away. My future always depends on results. I'm not concerned. I'm good here, comfortable, they gave me everything.

"My decision will be taken with the club. I have a lot of confidence. They gave me everything so I cannot betray them. That would be not nice. Together we took decisions to come here and to extend the contract two times and it will be the same now, it depends how they feel about me, how I feel myself in the club."

He added: "When I'm not energetic and feel a little bit drained or tired, I'm pretty sure I will quit. But right now, I feel good."

Dawson notes that Guardiola has been linked with Major League Soccer team New York City FC, which also falls under the City Football Group umbrella. It's currently unclear what international gigs would be open to Guardiola next year or if he'd accept such an opportunity or potentially enjoy a bit of break before getting back to work.
