Premier League confirms Sept. 12 start for 2020-21 season

This year's Premier League season still isn't finished, but that didn't stop them from making the announcement regarding the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

The 2020-21 season will begin on Sept. 12, the league announced Friday.

The current season will end on July 26, and teams who aren't competing in European competition will have nearly two months to prepare for the campaign.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused the 2019-20 season to end much later than usual. Play paused in March and didn't resume until June 17.

Fans currently aren't allowed in Premier League stadiums and that likely will extend into 2021. However, the British Prime Minister believes there's a possibility that fans will be able to return in October.

Other European countries also are trying to devise a plan for fans to return to stadiums safely, though Spain doesn't believe it'll happen any time soon.

Liverpool was crowned the 2019-20 Premier League champions on Wednesday after a 5-3 win over Chelsea.
