Premier League won't void 2019-20 season amid coronavirus pandemic

On Monday, Miguel Delaney of The Independent confirmed that the English Premier League won't void the 2019-20 season that was halted in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Per Delaney, the Football Association informed top-flight clubs that the campaign's results are to be determined by "sporting merit." If the remaining fixtures on the schedule cannot be played, a mathematical formula, such as points-per-game, will be used to determine final places in the table.

The report comes the same day the country cleared the Premier League for a June 1 return.

Liverpool sit as the EPL uncrowned champions with a 25-point advantage over Manchester City. Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolverhampton, Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal remain in reach of the fourth Champions League qualification spot.

Norwich City, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth would be relegated if the season ended today. Watford, West Ham, and Brighton & Hove Albion would all be in danger of the drop if the campaign resumes next month.

The Dutch Eredivisie and French leagues ended their seasons in different ways. While the Eredivisie voided the campaign, a decision that canceled promotion and relegation and cost Ajax the title, Paris Saint-Germain were awarded the Ligue 1 championship.

Germany's Bundesliga is set to restart this weekend.

Also on Monday, ESPN's Mark Ogden reported that over half of the Premier League clubs oppose playing at neutral sites. Particularly, those at the bottom of the table fear a lack of home-field advantage could prove costly during the closing stretch of nine or 10 games.

As noted by Dan Roan of BBC Sports, 14 of the 20 clubs must agree on any proposed "Project Restart" initiative.
