Nicolo Rovella suggested that Lazio’s clash with Inter could give the team confidence following their Champions League group stage success.

The Biancocelesti have booked their spot in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition, finishing second in their group behind Atletico Madrid. It was a key objective for Maurizio Sarri’s squad, who are still looking to find consistency in Serie A.

Inter have looked almost flawless in the league this campaign, trying to win their first Scudetto under Simone Inzaghi, so Lazio face a tall task when they come to visit the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening.

Speaking in a press conference (via TMW), Rovella first discussed what Lazio will need to beat Inter.

For us it’s a very important match, we will need attention and desire to work. The match against Inter can help us recover emotionally.

He was asked if he dreamed of becoming a part of the Italy national team.

It’s every player’s dream. I always watch the national team, I hope so, but I know I have to do even better.

The Italian midfielder touched on how the team have gained confidence after their Champions League campaign.

Qualifying for the Round of 16 is an important and not to be taken for granted goal, there were strong teams. We’re behind in the league but we’re there, that’s why the game will be fundamental. Conclusions should be drawn at the end, not along the way.

The team are strong, we are in the running for all our objectives. We have to score more and concede fewer goals, yes. We shouldn’t be afraid of anyone, we’re at home, and we want to win. I see how the team train, I’m sure we will do well.

Rovella discussed his personal history with Inter.

Against Inter it was my first match in Serie A. My family supports Inter and I started playing at the Accademia, a team associated with Inter. I hope my family will cheer for me tomorrow.

He spoke about his growth under Sarri.

I improved in the defensive phase, as the coach asked me at the beginning of the year. I’m doing it better. I have to do something more in the possession phase, raising the centre of gravity of my range of action.

Do I score too little? Yes, but the role of the regista is far away, it’s difficult to get there, but I have to improve, perhaps even with work from outside. There are few playmakers who score a lot, except those who take penalties or free kicks.

He was asked who he’d like to face in the Champions League Round of 16.

I don’t know, to be honest. I said Real Madrid when I arrived, it’s my dream to play at the Bernabeu. So I’d say Real.

Finally, Rovella gave his thoughts on Sarri.

I came for the environment and also for the coach. I confirm. He helped me a lot, even his collaborators. I confirm what I had already said about him.
