Filippo Inzaghi’s uninspiring managerial tenure at Salernitana ended this morning as the club confirmed his imminent departure. In an official statement, the Salerno outfit thanked the ex-Milan striker for his services after yet another disappointment.

Salernitana announce to have relieved first team coach Filippo Inzaghi of his duties, the club’s statement read. “The club thank the coach for his commitment and wish him the best for the future of his career.”

Inzaghi’s sacking comes less than 48 hours since Salernitana suffered a dismal 3-1 home defeat to fellow relegation rivals Empoli. That was Granata’s fourth loss across their last five Serie A games, diminishing their chances of avoiding relegation.

He took charge of Salernitana in October 2023 following the team’s rough patch under Paulo Sousa. However, he lost ten of his 16 games at the helm and racked up just two wins, practically compelling the club to show him the door.

Six points adrift of 17th-placed Udinese, Salernitana face a season-long fight against the drop. It could be up to Fabio Liverani to lead them to top-flight survival, as he’s emerged as the likeliest candidate to take Inzaghi’s place.

Liverani has been without a club since parting ways with Cagliari in 2022. But Salernitana still see him as a decent option to fill the vacancy. The 47-year-old is already in town and should put pen to paper on a short-term contract in the coming hours.

He could make his touchline debut next weekend when Salernitana take on table-topping Inter at Giuseppe Meazza.
