Sevilla wins another UEFA Europa League title

It took penalty kicks, but Sevilla FC beat Roma to capture the 2023 UEFA Europa League title in Budapest on Wednesday.

After a Roma own goal leveled the score at 1-1 in the second half, Sevilla rallied behind two heroes from this winter's FIFA World Cup in penalty kicks to win their seventh Europa League championship — most in competition history.

Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou (who led anchored Morocco's run to the World Cup Semifinals) saved two Roma penalties, while Argentine Gonzalo Montiel followed up his World Cup-winning penalty with the final blow against Roma on Wednesday.

The victory earns Sevilla a spot in next season's UEFA Champions League, where they will compete with the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but also helps put a positive spin on a tumultuous season. In March, the club fired manager Jorge Sampaoli as the club sat just two points out of the relegation zone.

Sevilla did avoid relegation, but its 11th-place finish in La Liga means that without Wednesday's victory, the club wouldn't be playing in any European tournament next season.

Aside from another chance to win silverware next year, Sevilla are also in line to receive $9.44 million in prize money to help supplement their squad for next year's clashes with the biggest clubs in Europe.

Jose Mourinho's Roma also walk away with just over $5 million for their second-place finish, but that seems to mean little to the Portuguese manager who was a perfect 5-of-5 in European finals before falling in Budapest and donating his runner-up medal to a fan on his way off of the pitch.
