Tottenham Hotspur fires manager Jose Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur has fired manager Jose Mourinho after 17 months in charge, the club confirmed to ESPN's James Olley on Monday.

"Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic," Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said. "On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution."

Tottenham is seventh in the Premier League and well out of the top four. Mourinho had lost 13 games in all competitions this season, more than any other in his managerial career. According to ESPN, several team members had grown frustrated by his willingness to publicly criticize the players after losses.

Mourinho succeeded Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 with clear goals of winning a title and maintaining the club's presence in the Champions League.

The Spurs are struggling to qualify for the Champions League and things could get worse if Harry Kane demands a transfer from the club this summer.
