With City’s boy wonder Phil Foden, back to his best, anything feels possible for Manchester City. The champions were in desperate need of three points when they hosted Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium overnight. Foden’s hat trick inspired his team to a crucial 4-1 win over Aston Villa. In the process, he helped restore belief that City’s chase for a fourth consecutive Premier League crown and the possibility of defending the treble remains possible this season.

Following last Sunday’s scoreless draw with Arsenal, the world champions’ title destiny is now out of their hands. While that remains the case following last night’s win, Foden’s heroics restored the belief that City’s chase for history and their treble defence is still on track. Sunday’s draw with Arsenal showed that Manchester City will have to fight to create history this season. Foden’s inspiring display showed that he and his team are up for the fight during the remainder of the season.

After Aston Villa’s equaliser in the 20th minute, Manchester City needed someone to step up. Last night’s game against Unai Emery’s high flying side was a must win game for Pep Guardiola’s side. To keep pace with title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool, they had to pick up three points. On the stroke of halftime, it was City’s boy wonder who stood tall to carry his team to a much needed victory.

His freekick on the stroke of halftime restored the world champions lead. Foden’s two goals in 7 second half minutes sealed the win for his team. More importantly, Foden’s heroics made it feel like anything is possible for the champions this season.

Foden’s display last night was reminiscent of the heroics performed by Ilkay Gundogan during his illustrious spell at the club. Time and time again, Gundogan would step up when Manchester City needed him the most. City’s boy wonder showed he his capable of similar as his team chases history this campaign.

With Phil Foden back to his best after a quiet display against Arsenal, anything now feels possible again for Manchester City. If Foden continues his strong form over the coming weeks, he could carry Pep Guardiola’s to something truly special come season’s end.
