Michael Carrick’s Manchester United return to action on Monday 13 April as they welcome Leeds United to Elland Road in their pursuit of Champions League football for 2026/27.

As things stand, the Red Devils are in a fantastic position when it comes to securing Europe’s top table next term.

Having been knocked out of all competitions, they are currently third in the Premier League – with 55 points from 31 outings – and have seven matches left to play.

Should they return to the most prestigious competition on the continent, striking deals for the perfect summer additions could be pivotal to any success.

That said, the most important business the club’s higher-ups will make this season will be finding the perfect long-term replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was sacked in January.

Carrick has been in interim charge ever since but, irrespective of whether he gets the job or not, midfield is a position in need of reinforcement.

Casemiro has confirmed that his decision to leave the club is final and Kobbie Mainoo requires an engine room partner.

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has been identified as a potential replacement.

Elsewhere, United-linked Adam Wharton is set to leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season.

Instead of going down the Premier League-proven route, though, Manchester United could turn their attention to a player in Serie A.

According to Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Red Devils are now in pole position to sign Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram.

The Frenchman was linked with a move to Old Trafford earlier this month but the new report insists that the 13-time Premier League champions are the current frontrunners.

That’s because United have made enquiries to the Old Lady regarding the central midfielder’s availability.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool have also been named in the report but the current Premier League champions are merely keeping tabs on the 25-year-old.

This season alone, Khephren Thuram has made 38 appearances across all competitions – either playing as a No.8 or in the sitting role.

Signing a player to line up alongside Mainoo in the middle of the park will be paramount to success next season given Casemiro’s situation and the fact that Manuel Ugarte has flattered to deceive.

With the likes of Wharton and Tonali likely to cost a pretty penny, former AS Monaco star Thuram could prove to be a cheaper alternative.
