Lazio stalwart Adam Marusic and his teammate Toma Basic would both like to stay at Formello beyond the current campaign.

The Montenegrin veteran and Croatian midfielder are running on expiring contracts. However, Claudio Lotito and Angelo Fabiani are keen to maintain the services of the two players who are considered essential for Maurizio Sarri’s plans, unlike Pedro, Matias Vecino and Elseid Hysaj, who are expected to leave once their deals expire in June.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via Lazio Press), Marusic and Basic have both expressed their desire to stay at the club. The two players will be free to negotiate with new clubs and sign pre-contract agreements in the new year, but they both gave their priority to Lazio.

As the Roman newspaper explains, the two players’ agents have already handed their demands to Lotito, so it will be up to the president to decide whether to accept them or make counter-offers. The source adds that the club has scheduled meetings with the players’ representatives in the coming days.

It should be noted that Lazio are now able to freely negotiate contract renewals after lifting the transfer ban. Hence, they will be able to offer their players pay raises, but it remains to be seen if Lotito is willing to go down that route.

On a related note, Il Corriere della Sera (via La Lazio Siamo Noi ) claims that AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare is considering a reunion with Marusic. The former Lazio director was the one who brought the full-back to Formello back in 2017. This development could add further pressure on the Biancocelesti management, who might have to act swiftly and decisively to beat the competition.
