Jannik Sinner just defeated Daniil Medvedev in the 2024 Australian Open final to win his first-ever Grand Slam title.
The Italian lost the first two sets of the match but then made a sensational comeback from there to register an emphatic win. With this, he has become the first player outside of the Big 3 (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer) to win the Australian Open since 2014.
Sinner’s campaign in the 2024 Australian Open has been all about breaking records. In his last match against Novak Djokovic, he became the first player ever to defeat the Serb in an Australian Open semi-final, and he did that in four sets.
He also became the first Italian men’s player to win the Grand Slam since 1976. It goes on to show that Italian tennis is in the right hands.
After his match was over, Jannik Sinner had a pretty fun conversation with Australian player Nick Kyrgios, who was a part of Eurosport’s Australian Open commentary team. Sinner told him that he and a lot of fans missed Nick’s entertaining style of play and that he needed to make a comeback soon.
Everyone is missing you. You are the kind of player that you don't see around so often. Your game style, your way to behave on court, you're different and we need this kind of players. Hopefully you're getting back. I'm missing you. Hope to see you back as soon as possible. And also you are a potential Grand Slam champion and I think you know it, so keep it up. Sinner said.
Kyrgios had a very interesting response to that, as he asked the Italian to be his coach.
Hey Jannik, well done, Grand Slam champion. My question to you is how much can I pay you to be my coach so I can win a Grand Slam? The Australian asked jokingly.
Nick Kyrgios’ will not take part in the 2024 Indian Wells and Miami Open
Nick Kyrgios was at the peak of his career when he played against Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2022 Wimbledon. Although he lost the match, the Australian impressed the masses with his performance.
He reached the quarterfinals of the US Open that year, where he lost to Karen Khachanov. However, after that, there was a significant drop in his performance due to a series of injuries.
In fact, he has only played a total of four matches since then. He missed the first part of 2023 due to knee surgery, and his comeback in Stuttgart was short-lived as he suffered a wrist issue shortly afterward, because of which he has not been able to come back to the court till now.
After missing the 2024 Australian Open, Kyrgios recently also announced that he will not take part in the 2024 Indian Wells and Miami Open.
