Rafael Nadal ‘s much-awaited comeback on clay finally happened as the Spanish tennis legend played in the first round of the Barcelona Open.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion played his first match after his loss to Jordan Thompson at the Brisbane Open. As the ‘King of Clay’ is back in action, Casper Ruud , like any Nadal fan, cannot contain his excitement.
The Norwegian was asked about Nadal’s comeback, and Ruud admitted that he was excited to watch him play. He also said that while many might call him a fanboy for reacting this way, he does not mind it. Ruud, who won the Monte Carlo Masters, said that he was excited to see a legend in action.
The Norwegian tennis star also highlighted the effect Nadal and the other two players of the Big Three—Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic—have had on the Tour. Casper Ruud also talked about Nadal being in the last stage of his career and then spoke about trying to get a sneak peek into Nadal playing.
You know, might sound like I’m like a fanboy, but you know, that’s okay. I mean his absence from the tour is not a, you know, you notice it, and it’s always fun when he shows up. Rafael Nadal gets ready for a bigger challenge in Barcelona
While fans saw a glimpse of what Rafael Nadal can do still at the age of 37, they will be eager to watch him play against a much tougher opponent in Alex de Minaur in the second round of the Barcelona Open. The Spaniard has dominated the tournament like no one else.
With 12 titles to his credit and a stellar record of 67-4 in Barcelona, Nadal will be backing himself to challenge de Minaur. However, the Australian is no pushover considering his form in the last few months. De Minaur has defeated some top players on the Tour, including 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
The Australian also has been enjoying a great run this season, having won a title in Acapulco and also reached the quarterfinal at the Monte Carlo Masters. It is to be seen how Nadal manages to tackle this challenge in his second-round match.
