Naomi Osaka pulls out of U.S. Open tuneup in Montreal

World No. 2 Naomi Osaka originally intended to follow her appearance at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo by participating in the National Bank Open held in Montreal that begins next Monday as she prepares to compete in the U.S. Open that starts Aug. 30.

Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), however, Osaka was one of several big names to pull out of that U.S. Open tuneup. No. 4 Sofia Kenin and No. 8 Iga Swiatek also withdrew from the Montreal tournament.

Osaka was set to return to touring events after she famously withdrew from the French Open because of reasons related to her mental health. She was previously fined for not participating in a post-match press obligation and threatened with disqualification from that tournament if she continued her media boycott.

Osaka didn't play at Wimbledon but competed in the Olympics, where she lost in the third round. It's believed she intends on taking part in the U.S. Open, the year's final Grand Slam.
