World No. 2 Naomi Osaka withdraws from Wimbledon, will play in Olympics

World No. 2 Naomi Osaka is continuing her hiatus through at least the first Grand Slam of the summer.

Per ESPN and other outlets, Osaka's team has confirmed via a statement she won't play at the Wimbledon Championships that open June 28.

"Naomi won't be playing Wimbledon this year," the statement reads. "She is taking some personal time with friends and family. She will be ready for the Olympics and is excited to play in front of her home fans."

The Japanese-born superstar made international headlines when she withdrew from the French Open after she was fined $15,000 and threatened with disqualification for her refusal to participate in news conferences and other press events. She cited mental health reasons for that decision, and the 23-year-old later pulled out of this month's Berlin WTA 5000 grass-court tournament that serves as a warmup for Wimbledon.

While Osaka appears set on playing in the Olympics, it's unclear if she will compete at the U.S. Open held in New York later this summer.
