In perhaps the most shocking news of the day, Netflix has canceled the ‘Break Point’ series after only two seasons. The show focused on portraying the lives of tennis stars on and off the court. The camera crew used to cover the lives of some well-known tennis players and document them in a unique way. Unfortunately, it was apparently not meant to be a mainstay in the world of tennis.
The reason for the series being canceled is pretty simple. The series had poor ratings and a poor audience. Moreover, there was a concern regarding not being able to access the top tennis players on the circuit and it is indeed sad because it featured some very interesting players like Nick Kyrgios and Aryna Sabalenka.
Netflix came up with the idea of the series first in 2022, as they wanted to cash in on the hype about sports documentaries that was created by the success of Formula 1’s ‘Drive to Survive’. The two top organizations of tennis, namely ATP and WTA and even tournaments like Wimbledon reached an agreement to allow Netflix to capture a behind-the-scenes perspective for various players.
Despite this being a first in tennis, the show was deemed to fail anyway. They failed to capture some of the major storylines on the tour, including players like Novak Djokovic which made it somewhat pointless. This again was one of the reasons that led to the show being stopped after two seasons.
The first two seasons of ‘Break Point’ could not gather a large audience
The first season of ‘Break Point’ had ten episodes, while the second season had just six, which in a way suggested that Netflix wasn’t taking the series so seriously anymore. The first season featured players like Taylor Fritz , Aryna Sabalenka, Serena Williams, and Nick Kyrgios, while the second season featured players like Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff and so on.
Similar series that were made for other sports, like Formula 1’s ‘Drive to Survive’ and Golf’s ‘Full Swing’ became significantly more popular than ‘Break Point’. Despite the fact that ATP, WTA and all four Grand Slam tournaments opened their doors to the project, it failed to gain popularity, which might be a wakeup call for the organizers.
Nick Kyrgios’ claim of tennis becoming a boring game eventually, might actually be a true threat, the dangers of which they might have to face in the near future.
