Luz Long's 1936 silver medal up for auction; finished second to Jesse Owens in long jump

The 1936 long jump silver medal that belonged to German track star Luz Long is currently up for auction at SCP Auctions.

It is considered to be one of the most important and noteworthy silver medals in Olympic history given the context under which it was won.

Long finished second in the long jump to American track star Jesse Owens.

The medal has a minimum bid of $50,00 and is expected to be worth somewhere between $500,000 and $1 million.

There was a long-time story about Long giving Owens advice in the qualifying round of the long jump, instructing him to jump from a few inches behind the line to avoid a foul, helping him advance and win gold. But Owens later admitted that he had not actually met or spoken with Long until after the competition.

The two men continued to stay in touch after the Olympics until Long was killed during World War II.

Bidding on the medal ends this weekend.
