The Aces made a statement, defeating the top-seeded Sun 85-74. The Aces improve to 8-6 with the win, while the Sun drop to 13-2 overall.
Aces dominate the Sun
The opening quarter featured a battle of the bigs, with A’ja Wilson and Brionna Jones leading their respective squads. Brionna Jones opened the game by scoring the Sun’s first six points and finished the quarter with 11 of the Sun’s 16 points. A’ja Wilson was the Aces’ leading scorer after one quarter of play, with six points.
The Aces took command in the second quarter, outscoring the Sun 25-12 and shooting 55% from the field while limiting them to 23%. The Aces dominated the rebounding battle 14-5 in the second quarter. Dewanna Bonner, who leads the Sun averaging 17.5 points per game, was kept scoreless in the first half on 0-4 shooting from the field.
The Sun rallied after halftime, going on a 14-4 run to trim the lead to single digits at 7, 54-47 halfway through the third. Dijonai Carrington led all scorers in the quarter with 11 points. The Aces responded with a run of their own, extending the lead back to double digits at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Aces put the game away, leading by as many as 19 points following an A’ja Wilson basket with 4 minutes left. Following that bucket, both sides pulled their starters, and the Aces won 85-74. The Aces went on to dominate the rebounding battle 42-29, with Wilson collecting 16 and Stokes getting 10.
Three Aces scored in double digits, lead by A’ja Wilson, who had 26 points, 16 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, extending her 20-point streak to 19 games. Wilson now owns a WNBA regular season record of 19 consecutive 20-point games. She also had a career high 16 rebounds against the Sun.
Kelsey Plum finished the game with 18 points, four assists, and her 1,000th career field goal.
Kiah Stokes finished the game with 7 points and 10 rebounds, eight of which came on defense. Alysha Clark rounded out the Aces double-digit scorers with 11 points on an efficient 4-6 shooting from the field, including 3-5 from three.
The Sun had just two players in double figures, led by Dijonai Carrington with 19. Brionna Jones finished the game with 18 points (8-12 from the field) and 7 rebounds.
The Aces will have a few days off before traveling to Chicago for a matchup with the Sky on Thursday. Prime Video will broast the game, which begins at 4pm.
