The 2024 WNBA season is fast approaching and the Phoenix Mercury have secured a massive contract agreement with one of their biggest stars beforehand.

Phoneix confirmed, via a press release, that Brittney Griner has re-signed with the team to a one-year contract.

After a historic college career at Baylor, Griner became the first-overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft by Phoenix.

While in Phoenix overall, the Houston native is a nine-time All-Star, six-time All-WNBA Team selection, two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and seven-time All-Defensive Team and has gathered two scoring titles.

Griner is the Mercury’s all-time leader in rebounds (2,125), blocks (766), double-doubles (64) and field goal percentage (56.0%). The 10-year WNBA veteran is also second in points (5,038), games (285) and minutes played (8,700) and fifth in assists (531) in franchise history.

Last season, Griner averaged 17.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 32 games. Because of the impact she made when ever she stepped foot onto the court, the 33-year-old was nominated as a 2023 WNBA All-Star starter, the sixth time she has received such honor in her career.

Earning some silverware along the way, the dynamic duo of Diana Taurasi and and Griner guided Phoenix to winning the 2014 WNBA Championship.

“Phoenix is home,” said Griner via the press release. “The love and support my wife and I have received from the organization, community and [the] X-Factor over the last 11 years has meant everything to us. I’m excited to continue my career in a Mercury jersey, and work towards bringing another championship back to the Valley.”

The Mercury kickstart the 2024 WNBA season on the road against the Las Vegas Aces on May 14 at 7 p.m. PT.
