The month of March marks the beginning of spring practice for the majority of college football teams around the country. This late in the coaching carousel, most programs have their staffs filled out but there are still a couple of dominos falling across the country.
Former Florida State quarterback Sean Maguire has been building a career as a coach since his time in Tallahassee concluded nearly a decade ago. Earlier this week, Maguire accepted an off-field position with Kansas State. According to his social media, he'll be working with the quarterbacks in Manhattan.
The New Jersey native joins the Wildcats after one season at Buffalo where he coached as an analyst on the defensive side of the ball. Previously, he worked alongside former FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M as a graduate assistant from 2018-22. Maguire's first job in the profession came as quarterbacks coach at Pope John XXIII Regional High School in 2017.
Maguire will be serving under head coach Chris Klieman at Kansas State. The Wildcats are bringing back sophomore signal-caller Avery Johnson, who passed for 479 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 296 yards and seven more scores. Johnson was named the MVP of the Pop-Tart Bowl after scoring three total touchdowns in his first career start.
It doesn't feel like it was that long ago when Maguire played quarterback at Florida State from 2013-16. He spent two years backing up Jameis Winston and is most famously remembered for relieving the Heisman winner against Clemson after he was suspended for one game in 2014. Maguire guided the Seminoles to an overtime victory, completing 21/39 passes for 304 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Maguire was a part-time starter the following season, splitting reps with Notre Dame transfer Everette Golson. Most of his action came in the second half of the year as he led the Seminoles to wins over Florida, Syracuse, North Carolina State, and Chattanooga. He passed for 392 yards in the Peach Bowl loss to Houston despite suffering a fractured ankle in the first quarter. Maguire played through the injury in a valiant effort.
During his career at Florida State, Maguire completed 157/271 passes (57.9%) for 2,039 yards with 16 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. He missed the majority of his senior season due to a preseason foot injury, paving the way for Deondre Francois to take over as the starter. Maguire was apart of a National Title, two conference championships, and an Orange Bowl victory during his college career.
