Georgia's Kirby Smart reportedly set to sign lucrative long-term extension

Head coach Kirby Smart guided the Georgia Bulldogs to the program's first national title in 41 years via January's 33-18 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship. Smart understandably is about to be rewarded for his work in a big way.

ESPN's Mark Schlabach reports that Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks met with the UGA athletics board on Thursday to discuss, among other things, a long-term extension that would make Smart one of the highest-paid coaches in the country. Jimmy Sexton, Smart's agent, couldn't be reached for comment.

Smart has served as Georgia head coach for six seasons and has thus far accumulated an overall record of 66-15. He first guided a team to the CFP National Championship in January 2018, but the Bulldogs fell to none other than the Crimson Tide on that night.

The 46-year-old has won four Southeastern Conference East titles and one SEC championship during his tenure. He put pen to paper on a seven-year, $49 million extension in the spring of 2018.

"This is an important contract for him (Smart) and for us, so it's just all the little details," Brooks commented on Thursday. "It's typical stuff, nothing out of the ordinary. We've worked closely with his agent, and it's been a great process."
