Mike Leach hospitalized as situation described as 'critical'

Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach suffered a medical episode at his home on Sunday and was hospitalized as a result. Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger described Leach's situation as "critical" in an update on Sunday night.

The university issued a statement on Sunday afternoon, confirming Leach was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center after an unspecified medical episode earlier in the day.

The football program will be led by defensive coordinator Zach Arnett in Leach's absence. No. 22 Mississippi State is scheduled to play Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 2.

As news of the severity of Leach's hospitalization spread, head coaches from across the country wished the Bulldogs' head coach well.

Leach finished his third and most successful season in Starkville this year, with the Bulldogs going 8-4. He previously coached at Washington State (2012-2019) and Texas Tech (2000-2009). He has a career record of 158-107.

Known as much for his colorful demeanor as his offensive acumen, Leach is one of the most fascinating characters in college football. He's as likely to offer his opinion on the veracity of Bigfoot's existence as he is to manufacture a 500-yard offensive game plan.

He's been essential to the fabric of the sport for two decades. The outpouring of support and show of concern for his well-being is a reminder of how much Leach is valued.
