Ohio State agrees to two-year extension with head coach Ryan Day

According to multiple sources, Ohio State agreed to sign head coach Ryan Day to a two-year contract extension through 2028.

The Ohio State Board of Trustees approved the contract terms, but the new deal still must be approved by the full board this week.

Day, previously scheduled to receive $7.6 million in compensation per year, will see a pay increase to $9.5 million annually with the extension. Day's bump in compensation ties him with Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker for the highest coach's annual salary in the Big Ten. Tucker signed a 10-year, $95 million last November.

Day helped lead the Buckeyes to an 11-2 record and a Rose Bowl victory last season. Ohio State began the season ranked No. 4 and rose to as high as No. 2 in the nation.

The 2019 Big Ten Coach of the Year became acting head coach at Ohio State in 2018 in place of Urban Meyer, who was placed on administrative leave. Ohio State promoted Day to full-time head coach at the end of the season.

Ohio State has a regular-season record of 34-4 and a 2-2 mark in bowl games in Day's four seasons at the helm.

Day and the Buckeyes reached the College Football Championship in 2020, falling to No. 1 Alabama, 52-24.
