UFC 301 has a Brazilian flavor to the card. When the country produces legends like Anderson Silva, such cards are given out in kind. With notable Brazilian fighters such as Alexandre Pantoja and Jose Aldo (31-8), it’s a homage to the country’s contributions to MMA.

Speaking of Aldo, the hometown hero has a bantamweight fight against Jonathan Martinez (19-4) this Saturday. The fight will serve as the co-main event, with the experienced Aldo looking to grab a victory.

But what must Aldo do to secure a win? How can Jonathan Martinez shock the Brazilian crowd and walk away on top? Here are the blueprints to victory for both MMA fighters.

The Tape On Jose Aldo

Jose Aldo is a seasoned veteran in the UFC. The Brazilian MMA fighter has defeated notable foes throughout his career, including Frankie Edgar (twice), Kenny Florian, and Urijah Faber. It’s safe to say “Junior” has had an illustrious career, establishing himself as a tough bantamweight.

For Aldo, his calling card is how he defends in the fight. He can defend strikes (60% strike defense per minute) and takedowns well (91% takedown defense per 15 minutes). Add in some striking ability and the Brazilian has good reason to be called a tough bantamweight.

Aldo will have to be patient with Martinez, who likes to play the long game. The native of Plainview, Texas, doesn’t like wearing himself out during the match. Therefore, the Brazilian must use timely strikes to rattle Martinez.

The Tape on Jonathan Martinez

Jonathan Martinez might not be as seasoned as Jose Aldo in the ring. However, that doesn’t mean he’s bad as a fighter. In fact, his record of 19-4 speaks for itself. “Dragon” has taken down foes such as Said Nurmagomedov and Cub Swanson.

It’s expected that Martinez will present a different challenge for Aldo. He’s essentially a good defensive fighter like the Brazilian, with a solid strike defense (58%) and takedown defense (69%). One can expect two patient fighters to take each other down in the ring. Martinez should stick to his game and watch for any incoming attacks from Aldo.

The Verdict

This fight will come down to who slips up first in the fight. There isn’t going to be too much reckless fighting between both fighters, with the two sides waiting to strike.

However, the hometown hero Jose Aldo should come out victorious. He’s the more experienced fighter and can beat Martinez at his own game. Don’t be surprised if this fight comes down to a decision at the end.
