Angels promising rookie exits game with shoulder injury

Los Angeles Angels rookie catcher Logan O'Hoppe injured his shoulder Thursday against the New York Yankees, exiting the game in tears.

In the top of the night inning, O'Hoppe laced a single to left field, immediately falling to the ground and grabbing his left shoulder. He eventually ran to first before leaving the game.

O'Hoppe's shoulder issues aren't new. O'Hoppe has favored the shoulder after swings throughout the early season, most recently against the Boston Red Sox earlier in the week.

The 23-year-old told MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger that he felt a pop, much like he did against Boston, but didn't know the severity of the injury. The Angels will reevaluate O'Hoppe in "the next few days."

After the Angels' 9-3 loss, manager Phil Nevin explained O'Hoppe's emotions, saying the rookie was upset over potentially missing time.

It's a tough break for O'Hoppe, who was off to a hot start to the 2023 campaign. O'Hoppe finished 3-for-4 with two RBI on Thursday, adding to his impressive early totals. Through 16 games, O'Hoppe has recorded four home runs and 13 RBI, slashing .254/.324/.460.

A 23rd-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, the Angels acquired O'Hoppe in a trade last August in exchange for outfielder Brandon Marsh.

O'Hoppe made his MLB debut last season for the Angels, going 5-for-14 with two RBI in five games.
