Braves sign left-hander Drew Smyly to one-year, $11 million deal

With the news that Chris Paul has been traded to the Phoenix Suns, a majority of other sports news may fly under-the-radar on Monday.

In terms of Major League Baseball news, another pitcher has come off the board in free agency. The Atlanta Braves announced that they have signed left-hander Drew Smyly to a one-year, $11 million deal.

The 31-year-old hasn't had much stability throughout his baseball career, playing for the Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies and most recently the San Francisco Giants over the span of seven years.

Smyly tossed 26.1 innings for the Giants last season, going 0-1 with a 3.42 ERA, 1.101 WHIP and 42 strikeouts. His best season came with the Tigers in 2013, when he went 6-0 with a 2.37 ERA, 1.039 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 76 innings.

The Braves now seem prepared to roll out a rotation that includes Max Fried, Mike Soroka, Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright and Smyly during the upcoming season.
