After his departure in September last year, longtime Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed has now found a new organization to play for in 2024.

According to The Athletic journalist Andrew Baggarly, Ahmed is joining the D’Backs’ NL West Division foes in the San Francisco Giants on a minor league contract.

“The Giants announced SS Nick Ahmed has signed a minor league contract and been invited to major league camp,” Baggarly said.

Known for his defensive acumen and play style, Ahmed was a two-time Gold Glove winner in 10 seasons with the Diamondbacks.

Throughout his decade as a D’Back, he played in 888 games, has a .234 career batting average, totaling 678 hits from 3,163 plate appearances and 70 homers.

But last season was where his offensive production took a dip in the wrong direction. In 210 plate appearances, Ahmed accumulated a .212 batting average with 42 hits, two home runs and 17 RBI’s across 72 games.

Then as 2023 playoffs were looming, the team decided to designate Ahmed for assignment on Sept. 5. Arizona would release him on Sept. 10, making him a free agent.

With Spring Training just getting underway and the MLB regular season around the corner, it will be interesting as to if Ahmed could secure an Opening Day spot on the Giants’ roster when it begins.
