Mets SP Taijuan Walker hoping to make rehab start next week
The New York Mets had somewhat of a brutal start to what should've been a joyous and sunny Friday afternoon that included their home opener versus the Arizona Diamondbacks when four different people associated with the Amazins tested positive for COVID-19.
There was, however, also a reassuring update regarding an injury setback that struck the Mets earlier in the week.
New York starting right-hander Taijuan Walker exited what became Monday's 5-4 loss at the Philadelphia Phillies after just two innings of work with what was later determined to be right shoulder bursitis. Walker was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, but Newsday's Tim Healey noted that the 29-year-old seemed optimistic ahead of Friday's contest that he won't be sidelined for long.
David Peterson tossed four scoreless relief innings in Philadelphia on Monday and could replace Walker in the rotation this weekend.
Meanwhile, ace Jacob deGrom confirmed he is "penciled in" for a follow-up MRI two Mondays from Good Friday to evaluate the stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder that could keep him out of action through at least the end of May. The two-time Cy Young Award winner began the season on the IL.
The Mets host the Diamondbacks on Saturday afternoon and again on Easter Sunday afternoon.
