Mets SP Taijuan Walker heads to 10-day IL with right shoulder bursitis

The early-season injury woes for the New York Mets continued during what became Monday's 5-4 loss at the Philadelphia Phillies.

As noted by the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), New York starting right-hander Taijuan Walker exited the outing after two innings of work because of what was initially referred to as right shoulder irritation. Joe Pantorno of amNewYork noted that Mets reliever Trevor May left the contest in the eighth inning with an arm problem as well.

Both Walker and May were set to have MRIs on Tuesday, and at least one is being shut down into next week.

According to Danny Abriano of SNY, Walker has been placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder bursitis. Closer Edwin Diaz returned from the bereavement list and replaced Walker on the active roster, and David Peterson is expected to temporarily take Walker's spot in the rotation after Peterson pitched four scoreless relief innings in Philadelphia on Monday.

This is Walker's second physical setback of the month, as he prematurely left his final spring training start with knee soreness. He underwent offseason knee surgery in January.

Both Walker and May took to Twitter Tuesday with their own updates:

Per Ryan Chichester of Audacy, May is dealing with a low-grade triceps strain and hopes that some rest will allow him to avoid a trip to the IL.

The Mets are already without ace and two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, who began the campaign on the IL due to a stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder. Tylor Megill is filling in for deGrom until further notice.
