The Chicago Cubs welcome the St. Louis Cardinals to town on Thursday night. Ahead of the NL Central action, the Cubs provided some information regarding injured second/third baseman Nick Madrigal. The Cubs infielder will venture to Des Moines and join the Iowa Cubs for a rehab assignment starting on Friday.

Madrigal is slashing .278/.335/.364 with eight doubles, one home run, and 17 RBI this season at the MLB level. However, Madrigal was hot before finding himself on the 10-day IL. In his last 15 games before the injury, Madrigal slashed .356/.431/.533 and in the 30 games prior to the injury he was still slashing .289/.355/.381. Madrigal found his stride prior to his IL stint.

Madrigal spent some time in Triple-A this season due to some early struggles. However, since being recalled on June 9, the infielder has not given the Cubs any reason to send him back. In fact, one could argue his presence has been missed since he was injured in the July 3 matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Iowa Cubs are in Des Moines for three more games after Thursday against the Indianapolis Indians. With the the MLB and Triple-A Cubs both having off days on Monday, it's possible Madrigal returns against his former team, the Chicago White Sox, on Tuesday, July 25 and is activated from the IL.
