Phillies' Bryce Harper doesn't care about advanced stats: 'I'm a GED guy'

We live in a post-Moneyball world and advanced stats have become the norm for how most of us interpret and understand baseball. But not Bryce Harper. In a recent interview, the Phillies first baseman said that he isn't interested in WAR, LIPS or any other analytics that are currently being discussed on Twitter.

"I don't really like stats. I don't really like any of that stuff. Exit velocity - I don't care about that, either," Harper said. "I'm more of exit hits. I want guys to get hits. I want guys to perform ... I don't understand any of that stuff. I'm a GED guy. I don't really understand any of that."

The extent of Harper's analytics knowledge seems to end with on-base percentage, as he said he knows "if you get on base and your on-base percentage is high, that's good." And that understanding specifically applies to Harper's stats over the last several seasons, as his OBP has managed to stay relatively high even as his batting average has dropped.

But even if Harper is not on board, it's hard to imagine that analytics will become any less relevant in baseball. And maybe with time, he'll come around and learn to embrace the analytics nerd that's been hiding inside him all along.
