Red Sox infielder takes big step in rehab from elbow surgery

Nearly three months after undergoing elbow surgery, Boston Red Sox infielder Trevor Story has taken a massive step forward in rehab.

On Friday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided an encouraging update on the veteran power bat, revealing that the two-time All-Star recently began playing catch.

Story underwent an internal bracing procedure on the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow in January. The initial recovery time had Story missing most, if not all, of the 2023 campaign. However, following the procedure, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chain Bloom told reporters via ESPN that he "certainly would not" rule out an in-season return for Story.

Boston could sorely use Story back at shortstop, as his replacements have not been able to get the job done. Utility man Kike Hernandez has gotten most of the opportunities at short, yielding less than favorable results.

Hernandez has struggled in the field, leading the Majors in errors with five early on. Meanwhile, at the plate, he does have two home runs and six RBI, but is slashing a paltry .114/.235/.295 over 13 games.

Story signed a six-year, $140 million contract with Boston prior to the 2022 season, after spending the first six years of his career with the Colorado Rockies.

During an injury-truncated 2022 season, Story recorded 16 home runs and 66 RBI, slashing .238/.303/.434 in 94 contests.

Despite Friday's positive update, there remains no concrete timetable for Story's return. If and when Story is healthy enough to come back this season, he will be a significant (and needed) addition to the Red Sox lineup.
