MLB commissioner Rob Manfred knows he's an unpopular figure among players. Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

In some ways, the MLB lockout was the culmination of player criticism of commissioner Rob Manfred. Manfred has often been an unpopular figure among players, many of whom have said so publicly.

Speaking to the media after ratifying the league’s new collective bargaining agreement, Manfred admitted that he had failed to form a good relationship with players and that it was something he had to change going forward.

“One of the things I’m supposed to do is promote a good relationship with our players. I’ve tried to do that. I think that I have not been successful in that,” Manfred admitted.

Manfred’s issues with players go all the way back to the Houston Astros cheating scandal, when he was widely criticized for his response. The bad feelings have not improved since, with Manfred’s handling of the delayed start to the 2020 season representing another low point.

Even Manfred’s harshest critics have been willing to praise him when warranted, so there may be room for reconciliation. There will have to be after the tenor of labor negotiations.
