Todd Helton to rejoin Rockies as special assistant to GM

The Colorado Rockies announced an addition to their front office on Saturday, hiring former first baseman and Rockies legend Todd Helton as an assistant to the general manager.

Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt said Helton would work with Colorado's minor leagues while assisting with other baseball operations.

"He won't be in analytics; I can tell you that," Schmidt said, via Patrick Lyons of DNVR Sports. "That's the one area he might not be doing."

The Denver Gazette's Danielle Allentuck says that Helton has already gotten a head start in his new job. Helton has reportedly worked with first base prospect Michael Toglia, the Rockies' 2019 first-round pick, since March.

Helton, a first-round pick by the Rockies in the 1995 MLB Draft, played all 17 of his major league seasons in Colorado.

A five-time all-star, Helton's list of accolades is long and impressive. He's the Rockies' all-time leader in hits (2,519), doubles (592), home runs (369), RBI (1,406), walks (1,335) and runs scored (401).

Helton was one of the league's best first basemen, both with the bat and the glove. He won four Silver Slugger awards and three Gold Gloves as a first baseman.

In 2000, Helton won the major league batting title, leading MLB in hits (216), doubles (59), RBI (147), batting average (.372), on-base percentage (.463), slugging percentage (.698), OPS (1.162) and total bases (405).

Helton is still on the path to being a baseball Hall of Famer. In 2022, Helton received 52% of the votes in his fourth season of eligibility. His percentage of votes has steadily risen; he received 16.5% in 2019, 29.2% in 2020 and 44.9% in 2021. Players need 75% of the votes on the ballot to earn induction.
