Watch: Mets' Pete Alonso hit in face by foul ball while attempting catch

It has not been a great season for the New York Mets, and on Tuesday night superstar first baseman Pete Alonso was involved in a play that was oddly symbolic of the team's season as a whole.

While attempting to field a pop-up in foul territory, Alonso was hit directly in the face as he slid in to try to  make the catch.

He did not make the catch.

Have a look.

That probably hurt. Bad. The good news for Alonso and the Mets is that he was able to remain in the game and did not seem to be injured.

That incident happened after he homered in the second inning to give him 31 on the season.

The problem for Alonso and the Mets is that the botched foul ball allowed Maikel Garcia's at-bat to continue, and instead of being the second out of the inning, he ended up hitting a sacrifice fly to tie the game for the Royals.

That is simply the way things have gone this season for the Mets.
The Mets entered play on Tuesday fading out of the National League wild-card race and sold off several veteran players, including future Hall of Fame starting pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.
