Yankees confirm COVID-19 outbreak among coaches, support staff

The New York Yankees are dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak and may not yet know the extent of it.

According to ESPN's Marly Rivera, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed ahead of Wednesday's game at the Tampa Bay Rays that at least seven coaches and support staff members have tested positive for the coronavirus. The news comes after Tuesday's announcement that third base coach Phil Nevin and first base coach Reggie Willits tested positive for the virus.

Perhaps more worrisome as it pertains to the club's schedule, shortstop Gleyber Torres was scrubbed from Wednesday's lineup out of an "abundance of caution" pending the results of additional testing. Boone said that all seven individuals who tested positive and also Torres are vaccinated against COVID-19, and six of the seven are asymptomatic.

Per MLB health and safety protocols, any members of traveling parties who test positive for the virus must isolate for a minimum of 10 days and then be cleared to return to team activities.

Earlier in the day, the San Diego Padres added right fielder Wil Myers and first baseman Eric Hosmer to the injured list roughly 24 hours after star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., outfielder Jurickson Profar and shortstop Jorge Mateo went on the IL due to the league's protocols. Tatis and Myers have tested positive, while the other three are high-risk close contacts.
