Yankees' Domingo German apologizes for domestic violence incident

New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German is attempting to make amends after missing the entire pandemic-shortened 2020 season serving a suspension following a domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend that occurred in 2019.

As explained by an ESPN piece, German addressed New York teammates on Tuesday and then spoke with reporters through an interpreter on a Wednesday Zoom call.

"I want to take this opportunity before answering questions to sincerely apologize to the Steinbrenner family, my teammates, the front office, and those around me who love me," he said. "I have made mistakes of which I am not proud of, and for that I want to apologize.

"I want to thank (manager) Aaron Boone and (general manager) Brian Cashman for being so patient with me. They have always sincerely tried to help me when I was going through my worst moment."

German added that he's undergone mandatory counseling and that "it was something that benefited me." Per Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, German said he and his girlfriend are still together.

Yankees left-hander Zack Britton generated headlines last week while speaking about German. "Sometimes you don’t get to control who your teammates are, and that’s the situation," Britton said. "I don’t agree with what he did. I don’t think it has any place in the game or off the field at all."

German, 28, went 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 2019 before he was placed on MLB administrative leave that September.
