The San Antonio Spurs fell to the Miami Heat 116-111 on Wednesday night. It was a tough loss and the team’s fourth in its last 10 outings.

After the fact, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich met with the media. During the press conference, he was asked point blank how he felt about his current squad.

“I love this group,” he said. “They might go through a bad period for three or four or five minutes, but they keep playing. They don’t give in and we’re just trying to reduce mistakes, get more experience for some guys and it’s paying off slowly but surely.”

The Spurs are currently 31-30 and sit ninth in the Western Conference. If they fail to make the postseason once again this year, it’ll mark the second straight year it happens. Regardless of whether they make the playoffs or not, changes are coming.

The Spurs that everyone grew up with will soon be no more. Fortunately, it seems like Popovich has come to terms with that and is handling the late stages of his career with poise and grace.
