The Hawks General Manager Travis Schlenk had a press conference Friday morning ahead of training camp next week. Various topics were covered, including Kevin Huerter‘s contract negotiations, but most importantly, Schlenk delved into the health of several key contributors.

Probably the most concerning recovery is De’Andre Hunter‘s, who had knee surgery this offseason and won’t be fully healthy at the start of camp. Schlenk did have some positive news, though, as Hunter is expected to be ready for the beginning of the season.

There is no doubt about his ability, but there are questions about whether Hunter can stay healthy. If he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, Hawks fans can fully expect him to be the team’s second-best player this year.

Unfortunately, several other Hawks are dealing with injuries. Schlenk told reporters that Bogdan Bogdanovic will be limited in camp after getting a platelet-rich plasma injection to speed up the healing process of his knee injury. Bogi basically played on one knee in the playoffs, so a fully healthy Bogdanovic will be a breath of fresh air.

Schlenk also went into Clint Capela and Kevin Huerter’s injuries that will keep them limited to start camp. Capela had a PRP injection for his Achilles to help speed up the recovery process, while Huerter had an ankle procedure. It must be noted that Schlenk does expect Hunter, Bogi, Capela, and Huerter to be a full-go by opening night — October 21st at State Farm Arena against the Mavericks.

Onyeka Okongwu is still recovering from his injury, Schlenk said. Big O started to break out in the playoffs but had shoulder surgery this offseason. Schlenk said he hopes he can be back by the end of December, but the expectations are still for him to return sometime in January.
